Aromatherapy and its benefits
“Aromatherapy†means using essential oils from plants for improving or maintaining health and beauty. The use of plants in their whole dates back to over 5000 years ago. India and Egypt are the first to have been known to use plant medicine and aromatherapy. They used them for ointments, embalming, perfumes, incense and more in everyday life. Soldiers in Greece and Rome carried myrrh with them to treat wounds. In France Lavender was used to treat burns. Essential oils and the use of plants for healing have been in our culture for a long time.
There are two methods used by Certified Aromatherapists that have been used for centuries, the first being Application to the skin. This method is most preferred as the essential oil molecules are very minute enabling them to penetrate the skin through hair follicles and sweat glands. Once they are absorbed they can reach the tiny blood capillaries and lymph and are transported throughout the body by the circulatory system.
There are many methods that can be used for application to the skin directly. A Therapeutic Aroma Massage is most beneficial as the massage stimulates the nervous system, lymphatic system and circulatory system all at once. In this method the custom essential oil blend is massaged onto the entire body for a relaxed, refreshing, therapeutic feeling. Another absorption method would be a bath with the essential oils or even a foot soak.
The second method used by Aromatherapists is the most commonly known, inhalation. Here we have penetration through the nose by the olfactory system which has direct access to the brain in the limbic system which in turn is the centre of emotional behaviour. By smelling these essential oils it sends different messages to our brains as to how we may feel. Inhalation occurs during a massage or bath but also is greatly beneficial in candles, oil burners, diffusers, spritzers, incense and so many more ways.
With all these methods there are many benefits to Aromatherapy for all ages from newborns to seniors, from the healthy athlete to the ill and crossing over. Some basic everyday uses for Essential oils are for the common cold, low immune system, sun burn, stove top burn, bug bites, energy boost, anxiety, depression, grief, high or low blood pressure, trouble sleeping and so much more.
